First Job Resources

Work Permit (Ohio)

If you're 14–17 in Ohio, most jobs require a work permit. Your school counselor has the form — ask them, get a parent signature, bring it back. Takes a day or two. Some jobs (like delivering newspapers or babysitting) don't need one.

Your First Interview

Show up 10 minutes early. Dress one step nicer than the job itself. Make eye contact, give a real handshake. When they ask if you have questions, ask one real one about what a typical shift looks like.

Know Your Rights

If you're under 18, there are hours you can't work on school nights, and some jobs you can't be hired for at all (most construction, most machinery). If something at work feels off — hours that don't match what you agreed to, being paid less than what was posted, feeling unsafe — tell a trusted adult. The Ohio Department of Commerce handles youth labor complaints.

What to Bring on Day One

Work permit (if required), Social Security card or ID, a voided check or routing info if they pay direct deposit, and a pen. Arrive 10 minutes early. Always.
